Course Overview

New Zealand’s ageing population exacerbates the demand for dementia support as greater numbers of older New Zealanders develop dementia. With the huge demand for dementia support skills in the healthcare sector, there’s no better time to enrol in a short course, especially one that has online delivery. After studying with NZSE, you’ll have the opportunity to make a difference for those in our communities. And given we have strong industry relationships, we can help connect you to employment opportunities in dementia support.   Through this course, you’ll be given the opportunity to develop communication skills and person-centred support knowledge, as well as strategies and skills required of dementia support workers in a healthcare environment. Students/employees will understand the effects on caregivers providing dementia support and the safe practices required for working with people with dementia in Aotearoa New Zealand. 

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the changes in people living with dementia and their family/whanau in relation to providing support in a healthcare environment.
  • Analyse person-centred approaches for supporting a person living with dementia in a healthcare environment. 
  • Evaluate effective communication strategies to support a person living with dementia in a healthcare environment.
  • Describe the safe practices required for working with people with dementia in a healthcare environment.
  • Describe the effects on the physical, emotional, and mental health of caregivers providing support to people with dementia in a healthcare environment.
  • Analyse the organisational, structural and functional components of the human body in the context of health and wellbeing for support and care.
  • Describe the structure and function of the human body systems, their interrelationships and importance for healthcare support.
  • Explain homeostatic processes, their significance in the human body and relevance to support in a healthcare environment.

Entry Requirements

  • Be 16 years of age or older and undergo a compulsory criminal record/Police check
  • Recommended minimum of Step 4 Literacy and Step 5 Numeracy on the Adult Learning Progressions or equivalent 
  • Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of competency in English language equivalent to IELTS General or Academic score of 5.5, with no band score lower than 5. This is subject to NZQA Rule 18, details of which can be found at: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/about-us/our-role/legislation/nzqa-rules/nzqf-related-rules/the - table/ International (onshore) students require a valid visa and insurance to study on the programme.
  • An interview and a short statement of intent on why the learner wishes to pursue a Healthcare qualification.
  • Recommended to have completed NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 2). 
  • This programme requires students to have access to a laptop/desktop that can connect to the internet with a web browser and a required minimum screen size of 10 inches. For device specifications, please talk to your Course Advisor.
  • There are no compulsory academic entry requirements.
  • All learners must have English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English.
  • International (onshore) students require a valid visa and insurance to study on the programme and must provide evidence of competency in English language equivalent to IELTS General or Academic score of 5.5, or equivalent, as required by NZQA Rule 22.
  • There are no mandatory prerequisites for entry to this qualification.
